UP! Studio is a professional filming studio with a group of aerial photographers committed to producing outstanding works. UP! Studio has rich experience in creating promotional videos, movies, TV dramas, commercials and large-scale communication events. They are known for their creative use of cameras and high shooting efficiency. Since being founded in 2014, UP! Studio has served a number of China's top 500 companies in the automotive, construction, IT, and cultural sectors (including Disney, Siemens, JEEP, NIO Auto, SOHO China and more). They have also helped BBC, CCTV, STV and other TV stations film several documentaries and videos.
High-quality videos and photos need a large storage capacity, and as they undertake more projects the storage requirements of UP! Studio has rapidly increased. As of 2017, the team has used almost 40TB of storage space, with expected data growth of 70% by 2019. Their initial storage solution for large-scale projects was to save on separate hard disks, and then to store the hard disks in a climate-controlled environment for long-term storage. Back ups usually took a lot of time, and the nature of this method of storage is not very efficient. A more professional solution that meets requirements for productivity, work efficiency and data security was needed.
As the main bottlenecks encountered by UP! Studio were storage space and network speed, they chose the TS-932X hybrid 10GbE NAS as their centralized storage center. The TS-932X supports five 3.5-inch hard drives and four 2.5-inch SSDs to strike a balance between capacity and performance. Two 10GbE SFP+ ports are also included. The TS-932X is QNAP's first ARM-based NAS that supports Qtier™. UP! Studio opted to equip their TS-932X with WD Red 10TB NAS hard drives and WD Blue 1TB SSD.
The TS-932X has two 10GbE SFP+ network ports. By using this NAS with a QNAP QSW-1208-8C 10GbE switch, UP! Studio quickly built a complete 10GbE network environment. With ten times the speed of standard networks, this increased bandwidth allowed UP! Studio to start working directly with files stored on the TS-932X instead of having to constantly move files to-and-from their local machines - resulting in a massive boost in productivity.
When SSD storage is almost full, write performance can drop dramatically as it lacks sufficient space to manage upcoming I/O and garbage collection. To solve this issue, QNAP provides software-defined SSD extra over-provisioning. This allows additional space to be reserved to assist in maintaining high write performance. It can also assist in improving he overall lifespan of SSDs and is particularly useful for IOPS-demanding applications.
To safeguard their work, UP! Studio configured their drives with RAID 5, providing high storage utilization and protection against one disk failing. The usage of specialized WD Red NAS hard drives also provides reliable and quiet operations for constant 24/7 usage. The TS-932X is also future-proofed to meet future storage demands as business increases. When needed, UP! Studio can connect up to two QNAP Expansion Enclosures to the TS-932X.
